Honored Citizens 2025
Dean & Pat Schrunk
If you have ever wondered about the meaning of being “rooted in your community” look no further than the Scio’s Library encyclopedia. Under that very definition you’d surely find a picture of this year’s Honored Citizen, Dean Schrunk.

Born on October 10, 1935, in Scio, Oregon, Dean and his twin brother, Wayne, came into the world at home, delivered by the beloved town doctor and family friend, Dr. Prill. Their father, Percy Schrunk, owned and operated Schrunk’s Drug Store, which he purchased in 1928. Their mother, Carolyn Schrunk, was both a teacher at the old Scio Schoolhouse and a dedicated worker
in the pharmacy.
Dean spent his childhood playing on the streets of Scio and along the banks of Thomas Creek. He attended Scio schools from first grade through high school, graduating in 1953. It was during his senior year that he met Pat Scott, who would later become his wife.
After high school, Dean attended Oregon State University, earning his pharmacy degree in 1960. While pursuing his studies, he and Pat were also building their future together. The two married in 1958 at the old Scio Baptist Church, and upon graduation, Dean joined his father at Schrunk’s Drug Store. More than just a family business, the pharmacy was a pillar of the community, and Dean took immense pride in serving Scio. He often spent his evenings delivering medications to elderly residents and homebound individuals—always with a smile.
Dean’s commitment to his community extended far beyond his career. Shortly after joining the family pharmacy, he became a member of the Scio Fire Department, where he served for an incredible 38 years. Following in his father Percy’s footsteps—who was instrumental in acquiring the department’s first fire truck—Dean dedicated himself to the fire service. He held the role of Fire Chief for five years, Assistant Fire Chief for 30 years, and later served three years on the Board of Directors.
His contributions to Scio’s education system were equally impactful. During his 12 years on the Scio School Board, he played a key role in the design and construction of Centennial School, a project that remains a source of community pride.
Dean also had a hand in shaping one of Scio’s most cherished events, the Linn County Lamb and Wool Fair. He served as Parade Chairman for five years and Treasurer on the Board of Directors for another five.
For the past 25 years, Dean has been a guiding force on the Board of Directors for Scio Mutual Telephone, helping the cooperative navigate an evolving industry.
Dean and Pat shared a deep passion for preserving Scio’s historic landmarks, particularly the ZCBJ Hall. Their involvement went beyond mere participation—it was a hands-on, roll-up-yoursleeves, family effort. From serving on the Board of Trustees for 20 years to organizing fundraisers, spearheading construction projects, and even painting the hall themselves, they played a major role in keeping this historic site alive.
Dean’s list of community service roles is extensive:
• Scio Lions Club: 20 years of service
• Linn County Alcohol & Drug Advisory Committee
• Linn County Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee
• Member of the Grange
Service is clearly woven into Dean’s DNA.
Through all of this, he and Pat raised a wonderful family: Mark Schrunk (Scio), Steve Schrunk (Scio), Lisa Schrunk (Bend), and Julie Fiske (Montana). Their legacy continues through six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. On March 28, Dean and Pat celebrated an incredible 68 years of marriage—a testament to their partnership and dedication, not only to each other but to the community they love.
Scio is a better place because of Dean Schrunk. His contributions have shaped the town’s history, strengthened its institutions, and enriched countless lives. Today, we celebrate him not only as an Honored Citizen but as a true embodiment of community spirit.
